Kotohirayama Expo 2025

The entire town of Kotohira becomes a stage where art meets future-oriented community building.

Approximately 150 years ago, during the early Meiji period, the first Kotohirayama Expo was held at Kotohira Shrine. Artworks and techniques from across Japan were showcased, and Takahashi Yuichi—Japan’s first oil painter—exhibited dozens of oil paintings while also staying in residence. This vibrant exchange between local creators and artists from outside the area brought modern culture and great vitality to the town.

In 2025, we bring this historic exposition back to life for the modern age.

The Kotohirayama Expo will present not only art, but also the challenges facing our region—environment, tourism, transportation, and daily life—together with the “sustainable town development initiatives” that are addressing them. It will be a place where the community, artists, residents, and visitors can connect and resonate with one another.

Through calligraphy, photography, installations, bamboo lanterns, and collaborative community projects, the Expo will strengthen the connection between the mountaintop (Konpira-san) and the mountainside (the temple town), weaving a vision of Kotohira that will carry forward into the future.
